Migratory Landscapes
How long has it been since everyone began carrying smartphones, able to photograph the landscapes around them with ease? Landscapes from all over the world are delivered to us on social media. However, these images — containing falsehoods as well as truths — have sometimes sown division and created turmoil in society. As we live surrounded by this huge volume of images, what are true “landscapes” for us now?
“Migratory Landscapes” is an exhibition of five artists who use their experiences overseas as a starting point for their landscapes. We, the artists, are trying to sublimate into our works the various memories from abroad we have taken inside ourselves — such as the sight of nature’s interwoven light and shadows, the feeling of air on our skin, and the history the land is steeped in — by overlapping them with the natural features of Japan, where we live. In our works, we depict landscapes anyone can see. And there is no protagonist. The works have the artist’s view of that landscape — “when”, “where”, and “what we thought”. We attempt to capture the subject from conflicting perspectives, such as East and West, past and present, illusion and existence, consciousness and unconsciousness. Confronting the works from two different perspectives expresses our intent to view “the world” and “the self” more objectively and to approach truth through these landscapes.
In this exhibition, the unique space of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum’s gallery will be composed of landscapes created by the five artists using various mediums, including painting, photography, ceramics, and video slide installations. Just as a migratory fish returns to the river of its birth after roaming the ocean, we hope the landscapes of each artist’s memory will journey from deep within our hearts and connect with viewers as new landscapes.
